Piano Lesson: What Can Pippi Longstocking Teach You About Piano Playing

by @ 10:25 pm. Filed under Uncategorized

Piano playing is an art with unlimited possibilites. Pippi Longstocking made a remark in a film that can be used when you try to learn to play piano.

Pippi Longstocking is a nine-year-old Swedish girl in a series of children’s books. Pippi has red braids and is very unconventional, assertive, extraordinarily strong, and rich. She lives alone with a monkey and a horse in an old funny house. Her friends Tommy and Annika accompany her on her wild adventures.

One Christmas when she was alone in the house looking out through the window feeling lonesome her lyoung friends and the children from town came in a procession to her house surprising her with a Christmas present.

She was very happy when she saw them and when she opened the present she found a trumpet and immediately started to play on it.

One of the children commented: “I did’nt know that you played trumpet!”. Pippi answered smilingly: “Well, it is easier when you have a trumpet!”

Much wisdom there. It is easier to learn to play an instrument if you have an instrument. It is easier to learn to play piano if you have a piano. Do you have a piano?

What does it mean to have a piano. Let me explain………..

One of my cousins lived with her family in a small town in a small house. In the house was a tall black piano bought from a nearby amusement park. This piano was fascinating in one aspect.

It was fantastically out of tune!

When you played a melody on the piano it was like playing in different keys at the same time. My cousin living there never became a pianist. I don’t know if the out of tune piano put her off but it sure didn’t help her.

She learned one funny piano song at least and I can still remember the sound of it on that piano.

I think that you can say that a piano has to be tuned or it isn’t really a piano. All those beautiful and fantastic piano compositions are intended to be played on a tuned instrument.

I would suggest the following….

1. Have a piano. Meaning a tuned instrument. Make it a priority to have your piano tuned by a piano tuner or if you are adventurous, try to tune it yourself! Read about piano tuning on the net.

2. Buy a digital piano. It is always in tune but has other small disadvantages. It should have weighted key action to imitate the action of an acoustic piano.

When I was a child we always had our piano in tune but I guess it is quite common to find pianos that is out of tune around the globe.

I guess you can get used to playing on out of tune pianos but this will limit your progress and the joy you deserve to experience when you play piano.

The Popular Notebook Trends At The Moment

by @ 8:59 am. Filed under Uncategorized

Do we all really need a laptop? It certainly seems that way because demand is skyrocketing. In fact demand is so big that taiwanese manufactures are expecting part shortages already. Its actually incredible that economic problems and all haven’t dented this demand for laptops either. Brands are trying to organise the technology loops but that doesn’t stop anyone from arriving and advancing things.

A lot of manufacturers have been bringing out gaming notebooks lately. These days you get tons of value because the latest tech is always poised to be released. System performance is also advancing and gaming on laptops is becoming more adaquate for gaming by those who need to be mobile. More positives to come from developed manufacturing practices is compact, cooler components that give way for slimmer, slick designs. Still there is a massive difference between the power of notebooks and computers however desktops are more roomy to make way for special cooling and such things that all help. I don’t give it too long before we see ultra portable gaming notebooks on the market.

Speaking of gaming notebooks, the vast choice are obtainable when they are custom built. With international companies you normally don’t have a clue what they put into the laptop computer. I fancy the idea that you can sometimes even specify what makes you require. Most of the notebooks found in retail shops are aimed to capture the maximum market share and not the small specialist markets. So basically this is why you need a custom notebook. I like that idea that there are tons of small sized companies providing good service for custom notebooks. To me this is a large positive.

Next generation notebooks do look like a mouth watering proposition. The minature £200 notebooks are shifting like hot cakes at present. They have their individual sector in the laptop market in such a small space of time. I actually feel that we’re bound to see ultra light 15 inch notebooks in the near future as well. If you use less powerful components then I figure this is really doable even today. It would hardly surprise me to see miniture gaming notebooks in the next couple of years. We techies will see something excellent in the next few months that’s for certain.

I’d personally recommend these cheap gaming laptops.

Features of Reverse Mortgages

by @ 9:53 pm. Filed under Uncategorized

Different types of reverse mortgages have certain similarities. These are their common features.

Homeownership

In a reverse mortgage, you are the still the owner of the house. Payment of property taxes and home-owner insurance and arranging repairs on the property is still your responsibility.

Repayment of cash advances and interest should be done when the loan is over.

Financing Fees

The reverse mortgage can be used as payment for loan charges. It is added to the loan balance and used for repayment when the loan is finished.

Loan Amounts

The plan or program you select as well as the kind of cash advance determines the amount of money you can get. Other reverse mortgages are costlier than others, and this can reduce the amount you can obtain.

Your age and home value determines the amount you can get in each loan program:

The older the age, the more cash will be obtained
The higher the home value, the more cash you can get.
The interest rates and closing costs can also determine the specific dollar amount.

Debt Payoff

The borrower can have the option to repay any home debt with a lump sum advance from the reverse mortgage. When the lender concurs to the repayment of the reverse mortgage, other debts against the home need not be paid off.

Debt Limit

The debt owed on a reverse mortgage is the sum of all the loan advances and added interest to the loan balance. When the worth of the home value when repaying the loan is less than the debt computed, that amount will be kept by the owner.

Repayment

When the remaining borrower dies, sells the home or permanently leaves the home, all reverse mortgages become due and payable.

Repayment of the mortgage is required any time if there is:

Failure to pay property taxes;
Failure to maintain and repair home; or
Failure to maintain home insurance.
On a reverse mortgage, lenders generally have the choice to pay for these expenses through loan advance reduction and using the difference as payment obligations. This is only an option when the available loan funds have not been used up yet.

All the conditions of the loan documents must be read and understood which may cause the loan to become due.

Cancellation

Upon closing of the reverse mortgage, a borrower is given three days to reconsider your decision. The loan can be canceled when you decide you do not need it. It should be done within three business days after closing.

Cancelation must be done in black or white through fax, letter or telegram. It must be delivered by hand, sent by mail, fax or through a telegraph company before the stroke of midnight of the third business day. Telephone or face-to-face cancelation is not allowed.

Please Mr. Postman

by @ 9:26 pm. Filed under Uncategorized

Here are a couple of email stats that make business marketers salivate: 92% of Internet users have at least one email address. 70% of all Internet purchases are made as the result of email marketing. Clearly, email marketing works, IF IT IS DONE RIGHT!

Once you’ve decided an email marketing campaign will work, (you have decided that haven’t you?) to whom do you send your newsletter, free offer, or new product announcement? ANYONE WHO HAS GIVEN YOU PERMISSION!

It’s plain and simple. To stay clear of any spam complaints and to be a good Internet citizen, not to mention a smart online marketer, send emails only to subscribers who’ve opted-in, and granted you access to their email address. Take a shortcut and ignore this advice and you risk big online trouble.

Most who undertake an email campaign, with few or no subscribers, begin to look for a way to speed things up. Their wandering eye eventually finds email list purveryors who promise to have just the right tonic to heal an anemic mailing roster. The pitch is convincing–”Buy our list of hungry customers. We’ll send your email to millions of people for $69.” The problem is, these phantom subscribers, on the lists of millions have never heard of you and opt-in, permission is not transferable.

Your course to email marketing excellence has to be charted with a list of subscribers who have given you permission. It isn’t easy to build your own list, but it’s worth every bit of the time it takes. And it’s legal! If you own a store, place an email sign up sheet near the cash register. Make sure your website has a “subscribe here” button to direct surfers to your newsletter sign up. And for those who’ve given you permission, ask them to pass your information on to their friends and family, some of whom will also join your mailing list.

For every tempting offer to buy huge opt-in email lists, there is a story of a smart marketer who builds a list of thousands of subscribers, in a short time, by doing it right. Follow that lead and do it right. Permission-based, opt-in emailings only, please.

Paperless CPA Office - Myth or Reality?

by @ 6:12 am. Filed under Uncategorized

As a new CPA on the block, about eight years ago, I had made it a practice to read as much as possible on practice management along with the regular reading I had to do keep up with the technical matters. I came across articles after articles about how it was possible for CPAs to operate in an almost paperless office. It was, however, quite difficult for me to imagine my own office being a paperless office.

“How could a CPA really operate a practice without papers?” I would wonder all the time. I thought of these talks about paperless offices as being something of a creation of imagination about how life would be in 2035 when I may not be there.

The technology that I was using in my office was helping me improve the production. It was also helping me learn some of the more advanced possibilities in my system. In my small practice, it was a simple client-server network with a T1 internet connection. It was during one of my overseas trips about four years ago, that I discovered the power of my system to its best. With the T1 connection and a static IP address, I was able to work on my office system from over 10,000 miles away without any problems. This was a wonderful experience and my desire to learn more about the paperless office became extremely strong at this point.

I spent a lot of time, powered by my strong desire, to learn on the ways I could possibly convert my CPA practice into a paperless practice. I had already enjoyed the pleasure of working on my office system from around the world. I thought that if I could only access all the other papers I needed to look at while working on a client’s file I would not even need to be in the office at all to work. Besides enjoying the frustrations of continuous interruptions, accessing papers was the only remaining reason for me to be in the office. Sure there were other reasons, but to carry out my work for a client, accessing papers was the only one.

Now that my desire was so strong, I started running into various pre-packaged solutions advertised in the direct mail and magazine advertisements. I checked out a few, called a few 800 numbers and received some promotion materials. All turned out to be beyond my budget. I had learned a lot about the potentials of my simple office network by now, and figured out that I was too poor to afford some of the good pre-packaged solutions available out there for CPAs.

Upon a thorough study of the technology in my office and the hardware available in the market at affordable costs, I came to an unbelievable conclusion. It was unbelievable because based on my calculations the cost of converting to a paperless office was going to be 5 or 10% of what it would cost me to go with a pre-packaged solution. This happened within one year of my trip overseas and it has been three years since then. I could not believe it but I had a gut feeling that I was right in my conclusion. I considered the cost of failing in an attempt to go paperless not too high. I was already managing a paper-full practice and if an attempt to go paperless were to fail - I would remain where I was - a paper-full practice.

I spent a considerable amount of time developing the detailed plans on the whole process of going paperless, ordered the scanner that I had studied and found to be most affordable and launched the project. In terms of managing the staff time to work on the conversion process and managing priorities it was quite challenging. The process itself was quite enjoyable and revealing (about the hidden treasures in my filing cabinets) but above all quite enriching.

At the conclusion of my project to go paperless, about 60 days from when it started, I discovered that it was truly possible to manage an almost paperless office. I enjoyed more than two years of paperless office at my practice. The efficiency of the office went up significantly during that period. Clients experienced a different, a much higher level, of efficiency in service.

There were certain things that went right for me in this process. I was able to develop my understanding in this area over the years due to my curiosity and had a good handle over the capacity of my seemingly small office network. I discovered that the current office networks, in many small CPA offices, are like human brains. They are highly powerful and highly underutilized.

A paperless CPA office is no more a thing of the future. The true beneficiaries of this move by CPAs are their clients. CPAs who do not have to spend a lot of their time pushing papers and locating lost documents, would definitely be able to provide high-level services to their clients and benefit them more. All clients deserve a CPA who is at least paperless at the basic level, which is completely possible with a small office computer network and a very small investment.

Insurance in Northern Ireland: Historic Difficulties

by @ 6:18 pm. Filed under Uncategorized

No doubt most readers will have heard of the Northern Ireland “troubles” or possibly seen some of those ghastly images from the seventies, eighties and early nineties on your television screens. Thankfully the worst of those dark days seem to be over. Unless you are a Northern Ireland resident you probably won’t be aware of the impact the “troubles” has had on insurance premiums in that part of the world, especially on motor vehicle insurance rates.

The lawless activities of those times saw a huge increase in vehicle theft for use in criminal activities or to build hastily erected roadblocks, usually resulting in cars, vans and buses being burnt out. So called “joyriding” was then and still is a big problem in parts of Belfast and Londonderry where youths steal cars of all makes and models to race each other on public roads, an unbelievably reckless pastime which has resulted in many deaths of both driver and innocent pedestrian. No wonder then that the major insurance underwriters who were prepared to do business in Northern Ireland charged hefty premiums compared to average premiums in England, Scotland and Wales.

With the advent of the “peace process” and the considerable period of normality that has come about since the mid nineties one would expect insurance premiums to have fallen significantly, however this has not been the case, leading to accusations from some quarters of profiteering on the part of the major insurers. An average automobile premium in England is around £200 ($360) while in Northern Ireland the average is closer to £600 ($1080) in my experience. Seventeen year old newly qualified drivers in Ulster can expect to pay a crippling £2000 ($3600) for their first motor insurance cover.

The underwriters and major insurance brokers retort that driving standards are poorer in Northern Ireland and our shameful road safety record does back this up to some degree. They also cite a higher claims rate and larger accident compensation payouts from the courts as another significant factor contributing to higher premiums in Northern Ireland and this is a valid point.

I personally believe that there has to be a middle ground. High insurance premiums affect us all and have a negative impact on our economy which is only just starting to recover from a long period of conflict. Perhaps more rigorous testing of our new drivers, advanced tests for experienced drivers, tougher sentences for car crime and road safety public awareness campaigns would allow major underwriters to charge less and bring benefit to us all.

What Color is Your Goldfish? Marketing to the Masses

by @ 9:37 am. Filed under Uncategorized

Oprah. Timberland. Starbucks. Phat Farm. Survivor. LiveStrong. Consciously or subconsciously it is estimated that people see over 5,000 marketing messages each day, this according to the “Father of Guerrilla Marketing”, Jay Conrad Levinson. These messages can range from a logo to a retail storefront. Regardless of your business type, marketing is by far one of the most critical skill sets that one must master in order to build a successful business. It is a powerful skill when used properly, but like a double edged sword, when it is not used properly or completely neglected it can be the deciding factor in the failure of your business. As a small business owner, if you are not consistently marketing your business and building your brand, you will not grow.

Conceptually it seems as if it would be one of the easiest skills to acquire. As mentioned above you see marketing everywhere. How difficult can it be to promote your business and share with the people you meet who you are and what you are about? But realistically marketing often is not taken seriously especially by owners of very small and home based businesses. When one does not have a retail storefront or office in a physical office space, it is especially important that one should not be sloppy or a minimalist in their presentation. Marketing is about the consistent advertising of oneself, one’s services and one’s products.
The main principle that guides a successful marketing program is ensuring your customer attains a familiarity with your business that breeds confidence in their perception to do business with you. This means the more your customer is exposed to your message the more likely they are to acknowledge your company and eventually purchase from you. You must be patient, persistent and professional in your presentation. A few minor things that you can do to help polish your presentation and your brand are as follows:

1. First Impressions:
Make sure that your company logo is professionally designed and your business cards are printed by a reputable printer. While it may cost a little bit more money up front than a do it yourself job, it will be worth it especially if you will not be printing a company brochure.

2. The World Is Your Audience:
Reserve a domain name (i.e. www.mycompany.com) for your company. If you do not have a preferred internet service provider I would recommend that you try a search for registration companies like register.com or network solutions. These companies will build a professional web presence for you for a monthly hosting fee for about $39.99 per month. While your hosting may cost a few dollars more a month than the industry average, it is a less expensive alternative to get started on a shoestring budget as opposed to spending a couple of thousand dollars up front to get a website professionally designed. Your company website is a great alternative to a brochure and almost a required necessity in business these days and affords you email with your company domain name. This gives you a more polished look as opposed to using an ‘AOL’ or ‘Yahoo’ email address. Additionally, you can reach a larger audience for significantly less money.

3. If You Can’t Be On Time, Be Early:
Keep yourself organized with a Day Planner and a Rolodex to manage your business contacts (if you do not own a computer). If you do own a computer, use a customer relationship manager software such as Outlook, ACT! or Dovarri. Always keep your to do list and customer information in a centralized place. Your clients are your business, so having a record to their contact information is crucial to success. They are your best and least inexpensive marketing resource when you want to launch a new product or when you are looking for new business through referrals.

4. Follow-Through, Follow-Through, Follow-Through:
Always be timely in your response and complete jobs and work on or before the promised date. The quality of your work should always meet or exceed your clients expectations. Remember to send your customer a thank you card, with another one of your business cards about ten to fourteen days after the transaction has been completed to confirm they are pleased with the work.

5. Be Yourself:
People like to do business with people they like and trust. Regardless if your company is 1 person or 101 persons, do not focus on your size and what your limitations are, but instead focus on your core competencies. What value do you bring to the relationship and how can you help your customer resolve their issues? This is what wins customers over.

Implementing these best practices into your business will help you to succeed in another aspect of marketing, referrals! Word-of-mouth and direct referrals are the most inexpensive yet most priceless marketing vehicle you can use to obtain new business. In the meantime, keep marketing and searching for new business everyday even during your busiest times. Yesterday’s marketing efforts equals today’s appointments and tomorrow’s sales.
